Jane Withers started as a child actress as the pig-tail-pulling, doll-ripping, bike riding nemesis to Shirley Temple.  After work became scarce in her teenage years, she took time off from the industry to marry and raise a family.  Her return to film was in George Steven’s epic Western Giant (1956), opposite James Dean.

Eventually, every member of the baby-boomer generation would come to know her as Josephine the Plumber in the Comet Cleanser commercials…and their children would come to know her by the sound of her voice in several Disney animated features, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).

Jane became a friend and confidant to Dean.  Withers hosted regular “alcohol-free” board-game parties at her residence in Marfa for the cast and crew.  Dean would often climb through her window after all the other guests had gone.  Jim had a favorite pink cowboy shirt that he wore regularly and refused to send it out to be laundered (for fear it wouldn’t come back, the way several of his favorite shirts had).  Jane convinced him to let her wash it, which she did and returned it nicely pressed.   Dean continued to bring her the shirt, even after filming had finished.  He brought it to her the day before he left for the races in Salinas.  His fatal accident occurred the following day.  That pink cowboy shirt still hangs in her closet and brings happy memories of their good times together each time she sees it.

This is a classic dessert of the ’50s with a beautiful presentation.  Chill the finished cake thoroughly (overnight or at least 3-4 hours) before slicing and serving.  I like to flavor the cream filling with a splash of liquor (I’ll be using Kahlua this time to coordinate with the “Giant” Martini I’m serving at my Cowboy Day party).
